Christine Ohuruogu . . . the world is not enough

It took a history-making three world titles for the accolades to start flowing for the east London athlete, writes Jo Gunston, but now the one-lap wonder is finally taking some time to enjoy the fruits of her labour, planning a more relaxed year ahead but with a visit to Rio most definitely on the horizon.

Despite always providing us flag-waving Brits with excitement when we watch athletics championships on the world stage, it seemed as if Christine Ohuruogu had never really received the accolades she deserved… until last year. When the 29-year-old dipped her head on the line for a photo finish in the World Championships in Moscow, Christine and Botswana’s Amantle Montsho looked wildly round at the big screen to see who had won. A millisecond later it was Christine who was beaming, eyes shimmering and half-heartedly consoling her opponent, who quite frankly is unlikely to make the mistake of not dipping for the line again. So having added a second world championship gold to her Olympic gold at Beijing in 2008 and London 2012 silver, had it taken becoming the first female British athlete to win three major world medals for her to finally get the plaudits she deserved?
