Sportswomen feel their achievements are undermined. The media must tackle institutionalised sexism in the way it covers women’s sport.
Scantily-clad ‘glamorous’ photo shoots, match reports with little focus on actual sport and a relatively tiny amount of coverage compared with that of men’s sport were among the examples of inequality found by Dr Carrie Dunn, Lecturer in Information and Communication at Manchester Metropolitan University.
The research was based on interviews with female international footballers and cricketers about how media coverage has changed over the last 20 years.
Dr Dunn, who is speaking at the European Association of Sports Sociology Conference this week on sportswomen’s responses to the media and their perceptions of themselves as role models, said: “Many of the women I spoke to feel that their sporting achievements are undermined.
