The World Championships of Ultimate Frisbee are coming to London this summer with 40 national teams battling it out in three divisions to be crowned world champions in one of the fastest growing sports internationally.
Ultimate Frisbee is a fast-moving team sport that has experienced huge growth in the past decade. It is a non-contact field sport played by two teams of seven players each. The object of the game is for a team to pass the disc from player to player, all the way up the field, and catch the disc in the end-zone, which scores a point. Players cannot run with the disk, but must plant a pivot food (as in netball) and throw the disc to a teammate. When holding the disc, a player gets ten seconds to throw it. The most important part of Ultimate is 'The Spirit of the Game', used to described the fact that every player in the game has to follow the rules and thre are no referees, instead players self officiate. It is a high-energy sport that requires players to outrun, outjump, outthrow, outcatch and outhink their opponents with speed, agility and endurance to cover a 100m x 37m pitch.
Columbia will take on Philippines at 9:30 on July 14th.
